Sascha Brylla German, b. 1987

Biography

Sascha Brylla was raised in a household with a photographer father and a mother who worked with ceramics. With an abundance of artistic mediums to play with at a young age, the artist quickly developed an affinity for creation. His method of creation, however, differs from the conventional method of ‘heaping on’. Rather, Brylla prefers to remove what is there. Starting with a layer of monochromatic tempera on canvas, the artist removes a line after another in a process that seems more akin to drawing. Once enough material is removed from the mass, intricate scenes of nature reveal themselves to the outside world. This process of elimination also mirrors the artist’s attitude towards external influences. Rather than constantly looking for the next source of inspiration, the artist aims to filter out the “currents of thought” that flood his head. His daily cycling to his Berlin studio acts as a moment of meditation that “reboots” his head to the clear state ideal for his unique process of creation.
